One of the oldest enemies of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles just got the chance to fight back the heroes with a half-shell.
WARNING: The following contains important spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles # 121, which are now available for purchase at IDW.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have just ended one of the longest battles they have ever fought. Old Hob may not have ordered the attack on Sally Pride’s rally himself, but he was finally brought to justice for his crimes nonetheless. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to last that long as Old Hob has just convinced the most innocent of Mutant Town to help him strike back against the Turtles without them even realizing it.
Despite their ferocity, the Mutanimals stood no chance against the rest of the Mutant Town citizens, who stood up to crush their attackers. While it was Man Ray who ordered the Mutanimals to open fire on the rally, Old Hob was equally held accountable for the years he spent terrorizing the Turtles, not to mention being Mutant Town ever founded. When the mob finally caught up with him, Old Hob survived the beating only thanks to the intervention of young Zanna, one of the weasel mutants who shaped Hob as if he were her father. The crowd’s thirst for blood is quenched, Old Hob is imprisoned and interrogated, although he does not provide any particularly useful information. As it turns out, it doesn’t even take long before such an opportunity arises, especially when the youngest citizens of Mutant Town visit him.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles # 121 by Sophie Campbell, Kevin Eastman, Tom Waltz, Jodi Nishijima, Ronda Pattison, Shawn Lee and Bobby Curnow sees Zanna and Mushroom sneaking into the room with Hob’s cell as soon as the Turtles finish their interrogation for the evening. The two young mutants are obviously shaken by everything they have been through lately, but none of it has diminished their love and loyalty to their adoptive father. When Zanna, Mushroom and Zinc debuted in 2020 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles No. 102 by Sophie Campbell, they had been mutated by Hob at the behest of the Foot clan in order to exchange the young mutants for much-needed winter supplies to keep the Mutanimals.
Efforts by Diamond, Sally Pride, and a cadre of other mutants ensured the Weasels were safe at Lita’s side with the Splinter clan, but Zanna and Mushroom couldn’t come to terms with Hob’s role in their traumatic upbringing like Zinc . Not only are they overjoyed to see their father, but they seem more than happy to help him escape on the pretext of becoming a real family together. Of course, there is no chance that Hob actually has something so healthy in store for all of them, which puts the weasels in danger again, without them understanding the seriousness of the situation.
In the past few months, Old Hob had seemingly made real strides toward becoming a better version of himself, and now it’s all done in a jiffy. The viciousness with which Hob was attacked was undeniable, but he didn’t really think he would leave the battle in Mutant Town unscathed, regardless of his actual role in it. After manipulating the young mutants who are so in love with him again, there is no hope of salvation for Hob. And if so, it’s buried so deep under the surface that it probably doesn’t matter at all.
