Marcos Ambrose has come to Garry Rogers Motorsport in the role of âCompetition Directorâ.
The two-time Supercars Champion will be “actively involved” in a number of areas of GRM’s emerging activities, including Supercheap Auto TCR Australia, the VHT S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship and the National Trans Am Series.
In particular, Ambrose’s area of ââresponsibility includes driver coaching, race car preparation, engineering and team operations.
The former Stone Brothers Racing superstar has returned to the spotlight this year in a part-time television role with Supercars.
He has also returned to the competition as crew chief for his friend and compatriot Owen Kelly, who drives a GRM-prepped Ford Mustang at National Trans Am.
However, Ambrose’s ties to Garry Rogers date back to his Formula Ford days when the Larrikin team owner supported his then still young career.
“My relationship with Garry Rogers goes back to the beginning of my racing career,” said the NASCAR Cup Series race winner.
âProbably not many people know that, but Garry and his longtime sponsor Valvoline supported me in Formula Ford.
âLately I’ve enjoyed teaming up with my good friend Owen Kelly and helping him get back into motorsport in the Trans Am Series, where GRM prepared Owens’ car between races.
âAfter that, Garry and I had a chat about helping the team where I could, both in terms of racing and the future growth of the GRM business.
âGarry and Barry [Rogers, son and team director] run one of the most established racing teams in the country and, from everything I’ve seen so far, have a very competent and energetic workforce.
âI’ve always been a passionate winner and I also enjoy the technical side of motorsport. Working with the GRM team gives me a great opportunity to experience both. “
In addition to its motorsport successes, Ambrose now owns the Thousand Lakes Lodge, which was named third on Lonely Planet’s 2018 list of âTop 10 Best New Places to Stay in the worldâ.
Garry Rogers said: âHaving Marcos as part of GRM is fantastic not only for us as a team but also for the sport and the categories we compete in.
âWe all know that Marcos is one of the most respected racing drivers Australia has ever produced. You also don’t win two V8 supercar championships and drive for ‘The King’ Richard Petty in NASCAR without developing a keen perspective on motorsport.
âIt’s not just driving the racing car, it’s working with commercial partners, it’s the mechanical side, it’s a team to organize … right through to packing the van.
“We have a brilliant and experienced team, but we never stop learning and Marcos’ contribution will undoubtedly help bring out the best in all of us.”
Barry Rogers is a major shareholder in the Australian Racing Group, which owns Supercheap Auto TCR Australia, S5000 and National Trans Am.
GRM is also directly a major player, racing multiple cars in each of these categories and being the technical partner for S5000, including building all 17 of the Rogers AF01 / V8 chassis currently in existence.
The TCR and National Trans Am seasons will continue with the rescheduled Morgan Park round in mid-August, while the S5000 2021/22 will begin in Sandown in September.
