Amsterdam football twists the script of Case II with another last-minute win

AMSTERDAM – It was a classic case of opposing styles: Ballston Spa’s controlled running game versus Amsterdam’s speed-enhancing passing game.

For one half, it looked like Ballston Spa had the right formula. However, the Rams put down a notable rally in the second half at Lynch Literacy Academy Friday night for a 38-37 Class A win.

Amsterdam (2-0 Class A Capital, 4-0 overall) didn’t take their first lead until the green touchdown with 35 seconds to go in the fourth quarter – a 5-yard quarterback keeper from Jhai Vellon in the only game in progress during a rush- Five game up drives that covers 49 yards after regaining an onside kick.

Ballston Spa (0-1 Class A Grasso, 2-3 overall) couldn’t have asked for a better start. The Scotties scored their first touchdown in nine consecutive rushing games and later attacked an Amsterdam player in the end zone for safety before adding another blistering touchdown from Blaine Zoller for a 17-0 lead, 27 seconds back in the first quarter .

Ballston Spa’s floor play was so dominant that Amsterdam didn’t even have the ball to get back into play in the first half. After the first 24 minutes – the Scotties were leading 24-7 – Ballston Spa had a 190-0 lead in rushing yards, and Amsterdam’s passing attack was only 2 for 6 for 22 yards with an interception.

In the second half it looked like the Scotties had enough to withstand Amsterdam’s furious comeback efforts for a while. In addition, the Rams did not help each other with a couple of Ballston Spa results with penalty shootouts.

Ballston Spa was still leading by 31:19 after three quarters. But the Scotties’ collars tightened when Vellon found Louie Gonzalez for a 40-yard touchdown to make it 31:25 with 9:55.

The Scotties added an insurance score to Tyler Leahey’s 20 yard run at 5:27, making it 37-25.

But then the Rams did what became their usual: make the seemingly impossible, or at least the unbelievable, happen. Vellon hit Gonzales for a 25 yard score to make it 37-32 with 1:45.

Amsterdam recovered from the onside kick – a very close game that Ballston Spa coaches believed didn’t cover the necessary 10 yards, but that went in the direction of the Rams.

After the rough passing game in the first half, Vellon rose in the second half, going 15 of 19 for 265 yards and four touchdowns, alongside the rush for the eventual winner.

Darrien Insogna had 90 yards rushing and three touchdowns for the Scotties while Blaine Zoller had 114 yards and one touchdown.
