Broncos move forward with three teams to the semi-finals of the Barb Chandler Classic

BOISE, Idaho – Boise state women’s tennis had a solid opening day at the Barb Chandler Classic on Friday as three of the four Broncos teams advanced to Saturday’s semifinals. The teams from were groundbreaking for the blues and oranges Holly Stewart and Ana Conde Vendrell, as well as Joana Baptista and Pauline Ernstberger who advanced with victories in blue flight while Nicole Discenza and Bhakti Shah won the Orange Flight.

The Barb Chandler Classic offers a unique format in which participants compete against each other in pairs / teams of two throughout the tournament. Each competition consists of one double and two single games, whereby the winner of the best of three points advances.

“Overall, I think today was a solid start for us. We’ve definitely seen an improvement over last weekend,” said head coach Beck Roghaar. “We want to play our way deep into the tournament. I can see that the team will play even better tennis tomorrow and show themselves from their best side. I was very happy that we advanced many of our teams and won many games, we are hungry for more of it tomorrow. “

In the Blue Flight, Stewart and Conde Vendrell faced a duo from the state of Montana in Marta Garcia Reboredo and Andrea Cuquerella. The Boise State tandem swept the Bobcat team 3-0, starting with a dominating one-two 6-1. Then in the singles Stewart beat Reboredo in straight sets 6-1, 7-5, while Conde Vendrell also won in straight sets with a solid 6-2, 6-2 win.

“I definitely think Holly and Ana did some really good things out there today,” said Roghaar. “They started solidly in their doubles match and then carried that momentum into the singles. We made some small adjustments during training this week and I’ve seen the work translate into their success today.”

Baptista and Ernstberger were just as impressive as Stewart and Conde Vendrell, who won their game 3-0 against Maria Villarejo and Mirte Van Baelen from the state of Montana. The Boise State pair cruised to a 6-2 one-two, followed by two straight wins. Baptista rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Villarejo, while Ernstberger defeated Van Baelen 6-2, 7-5 to complete the sweep.

Discenza and Shah made it three times for the Broncos as they moved forward with a win over Idaho’s Saffron Dowse and Jayanne Palma. The doubles were close as the vandal duo tried to scramble for the win but were denied by a determined Discenza and Shah who believed they were a 7-5 win. As in the other two games, the Broncos won both individual competitions in straight sets. Shah sent Dowse 6-2, 6-4, followed by Discenza, who fought for a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 win over Palma.

The promotion continues throughout the weekend from 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday at the Appleton Tennis Center.
