Cumbrian driver Frank Bird is sailing to rally victory

Cumbrian driver Frank Bird claimed an all-out victory on his return to the rally.

Two weeks after taking the highways of the Otterburn Military Territories, Bird won the Neil Howard Memorial Stages Rally in Oulton Park, Cheshire.

At the start of the Motorsport News Circuit Rally Championship with MSVR, the 22-year-old swept the competition aside and scored the maximum number of points.

Bird from Penrith, together with the Lake District-based co-driver Jack Morton, had only their second outing in the Ford Fiesta Rally2 prepared by Dom Buckley Motorsport and supported by Frank Bird Poultry with the support of Hager, Fuchs Titan Oils, Aico and Yuasa, as the couple took on the show’s established stars as it led from start to finish.

The pair were fastest on the first stage with six seconds, steadily expanded their lead over the eight stages and won with over a minute.

Bird has done little rally this year due to his involvement in the Sprint and Endurance Championship of the Fanatec GT World Cup Europe at the wheel of Team WRT Audi R8 LMS, and this was only the second time in an asphalt rally since May.

He said: “We had a good run with no problems to report. It was my first time using the Michelin tires as the championship dictates but the car ran flawlessly and Jack did a great job on the grades as always.

“I can’t do all the laps in the series, so it’s important to get the maximum number of points in our races. So this is a great start. ”
