The end of Denis Villeneuves Dune leaves the surviving heroes at a crossroads – and prepares the most important events of the sequel.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Dune, which is now in theaters and on HBO Max.
Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049), dune is the first part of a two-part adaptation of the science fiction novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. As a result, the film ends stuck in the middle of the story with the hero on the run after an attack on his family. Things are already moving for him to gain new power and to take up the fight against the enemies who tried to kill him.
duneThe ending of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) is a sequel to portray the ongoing adventures of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he tries to muster enough power to recapture what his family has lost. It also demonstratively leaves the fate of certain characters in the air.
dune covers the first half of the original science fiction classic, with Paul’s family invading the world of Arrakis. In addition to his father Leto (Oscar Isaac) and mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), Paul has little time to formally get used to his new home before everything falls into chaos. An attack by House Harkonnen – which was quietly planned strategically with the Galactic Emperor – leaves most of House Atreides’ troops devastated. While Paul and Jessica manage to escape, their defenses collapse. Ultimately, Leto is captured and brought before Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård) and tries to murder him with the gas that Doctor Yueh (Chang Chen) gave him, but Harkonnen survives. Soon he orders his nephew Glossu (Dave Bautista) to gather their strength and begin destroying the local Fremen.
Paul and Jessica secretly survived House Harkonnen attempts to let them die and are taken in by Doctor Liet-Kynes (Sharon Duncan-Brewster) – and they reunite with their ally Duncan Idaho (Jason Mamoa). Although Paul and Jessica use their allies to flee into the desert and reach the Fremen, both Liet-Kynes and Idaho are killed in the process. The film ends with Paul earning his place next to Stilgar’s (Javier Bardem) people and venturing into the deserts of Arrakis. This will allow Paul to protect the remains of his family, give the Fremen a chance to grow as a culture, and take revenge on House Harkonnen.
dune Much ends in the middle of Paul’s journey, with the true extent of his abilities not yet revealed but hinted at by visions caused by the spice’s psychedelic effects on the world. However, Paul has started to better understand his visions of the future and recognizes Chani (Zendaya) in them, establishing their meaning. Although the conditions are set for Paul’s journey to continue and his crusade against House Harkonnen to take a new turn – especially since Glossu begins his purge of the Fremen while Paul tries to collect them – there are still a handful of wild cards in the Game . In particular, it has not been confirmed that two senior members of the Atreides Forces suffered the inglorious fate of their allies: Gurney Halleck (Josh Brolin) and Thufir Hawat (Stephen McKinley Henderson).
Gurney was one of Paul’s main mentors, teaching him the fight and serving at Leto’s side before the coup. Gurney was last seen engaging the Harkonnen forces in combat, and his fate is ambiguous. Likewise, Thufir was an adviser to the family and was not actively targeted in the attack. Since the events of the original dune are effectively only half told by this new film adaptation, their overall arcs are not yet fully completed, but give the heroes the chance to possibly call them in the battles to come. Paul’s visions of the future could still have a serious impact on the entire universe and annoy that the cross-galaxy events of dune are just the beginning for Paul.
Dune is currently in theaters and is streaming on HBO Max for a limited time.
