Two-time CART champion and Paralympic gold medalist Alex Zanardi was discharged from hospital 18 months after a handbike accident.
The former Formula 1 driver was hit by a truck during a race in June 2020 and suffered serious head injuries.
He underwent several operations in a care facility in Italy.

Zanardi’s wife Daniela has published an update on the 55-year-old’s condition.
“The recovery continues to be a long process,” she said.
âThe rehabilitation program led by doctors, physiotherapists, neuropsychologists and speech therapists has made steady progress possible. Of course, there are setbacks and they can still happen.
âSometimes you have to take two steps back to take a step forward. But Alex proves again and again that he is a real fighter.
âAn important step was that Alex was able to leave the hospital a few weeks ago and is now back home with us.

“We had to wait a very long time and are very happy that it was now possible, even if temporary stays in special clinics are planned for the future in order to carry out special rehabilitation measures on site.”
Zanardi lost both legs in a terrible accident in Germany in 2001, but returned to racing in a modified car with hand control.
Then he turned to hand cycling and won gold medals in both the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics.
âYou still can’t predict how your recovery will develop. There is still a long and challenging path that Alex tackles with a lot of fighting spirit, âsaid Daniela.
âIt is a great help for him and for us that we are getting so much support along the way, not just from the doctors and therapists who work intensively with him.
“We would like to express a great grace to all who send their good thoughts and their strength to Alex. We wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.”
