Four topics of conversation from a fantastic Rally Finland

Breen takes third podium in a row

Craig Breen, who has only signed on to one WRC sub-program with Hyundai, has to take every chance to shine, and the Irishman did so again at Rally Finland. After finishing second in Estonia and Ypres in Belgium, the 31-year-old secured a hat-trick of podium places in 2021 with a good advance to third place in Finland.

Breen took on Tänak by winning two stages on the first day and then caused a stir by overtaking the 2019 World Champion in the dark on Oittila and leading it overnight. That advantage was quickly dashed by the Flying Evans on Saturday morning and although Breen was knocked out of the battle for victory, he kept his composure to take a convincing third place, 16.6 seconds ahead of home hero Esapekka Lappi in his privateer Yaris.

“It’s a proud moment, three podiums in a row – I can’t believe it,” said Breen. “I would have liked to have gone one more level and fought for victory – it’s not there yet. But it’s better than in the past. “

The WRC is now going to its penultimate round of the season, the Rallye Catalunya, from October 14th to 17th. Evans will have a tough time beating Ogier on tarmac, but with the confidence of Finland and a performance he admitted to be “probably the highest” of his career, the flying Welshman would be fine right now.
