The Motorkhana Vietnam 2022 tournament, the country’s first ever auto racing competition, will be held on January 15th at the F1 track of the My Dinh National Sports Complex.

The racers compete in two rounds in a knockout format on an 800 m course. After the qualifications, the top 16 move on to the next round. The tournament will also have female participants competing against the male racers.

Motorkhana involves steering a car through obstacles and surfaces. It requires precisely maneuvering the car while maintaining speed through the course. The vehicles used for Motorkhana include everyday cars such as sedans, hatchbacks, CUVs and SUVs. It is considered the most accessible form of auto racing and is suitable for development in Vietnam, where auto racing is a novelty.

This is the first Motorkhana tournament ever held in Vietnam. It is a national competition approved by the General Department of Physical Education and Sports of Vietnam and licensed by the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports.

As part of Motorkhana Vietnam 2022, the organizers will select the best racing drivers to represent the country at the FIA World Motorsport Games, which will take place in Europe in October.

Construction of the 5607 meter long F1 track in Hanoi began in March 2019. However, once it was completed, Hanoi was unable to host the first F1 race in Vietnam as planned due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dinh Van Luyen, head of the sports management division of Hanoi Ministry of Culture and Sports, said a final decision on the track is pending but will only be used for athletic purposes.
