Lady Knights go 2-1, fall at Breakdown Tip-off Classic | Sports

STMA won two games during the week before losing their first game of the season to Stillwater at the Breakdown Tip-off Classic at Hopkins on Saturday 4th December.

The Lady Knights faced a former conference opponent in Rogers on November 30th and won 80-65.

The two teams stayed close to each other during the first half, with STMA taking the break at 39:30. The Lady Knights began to peel off in the second half when some key baskets fell. At one point, STMA led 53-35.

After taking the bigger lead, the STMA defense held on and the end result was 80-65. Tessa Johnson was leading with 31 points. Abby Hoselton was next in line at 15. Ja’Kahla Craft was 13 and Emma Miller was 11.

Head coach Kent Hamre said it was great to be back in the gym and to see all the kids and parents in the audience.

“We have so much support here at STMA for all activities, it’s great, I love it,” he said.

Johnson said she trusted her teammates and God in the ongoing process of returning from last season’s injury.

“When I come back this is what I’ll see the most, it will take a long time,” she said, referring to her progress.

The Lady Knights defeated the Elk River on December 2 with a score of 62-32. STMA kept Elk River goalless for the first eight minutes of play, building a 21-0 lead during that time.

While Elk River eventually scored some points, STMA’s lead only grew until it hit 37-9 in the half.

In the second half, the Lady Knights defended their big lead and cruised to victory. Johnson had 17 points to top all scorers. Miller scored 11 points in the win.

STMA entered the Breakdown Tip-off Classic with a 4-0 record but lost their first game against Stillwater on Saturday.

This time the Lady Knights fell victim to an early game deficit when Stillwater took the 10-0 lead. STMA ran out of it before Stillwater made a big run. The Lady Knights made another comeback to reduce the gap to eight points at halftime.

The second half consisted of the Lady Knights trying to rally, but Stillwater did just enough to stay ahead. The end result was 70-66, bringing STMA’s record down to 4-1.

Johnson had another big game with 29 points and eight rebounds. Miller scored 12 points and Lauren Hoselton had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Knights hosted St. Louis Park on December 7th, after the editorial deadline. You will travel to Waconia on Friday, December 10th at 7pm
