SAUK CENTRE, Minn. — Saint John’s Golf won its 16-team Winter Classic tournament by one shot on a windy Saturday, April 23, at the par 72 Lynx National GC at the Sauk Center.
Five strokes down and four holes to go, the Johnnies started the rally with a combined 6-under on par-5, 625 yards on #15 and two more birdies on #16.
SJU recorded its sixth win of the season with 293 (+5), a shot ahead of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in second place (+6, 294). No. 19 Gustavus Adolphus was third with a 295 (+7), followed by Bethel (+13, 301) and SJU Blue (+23, 311).
second grader Glavine Schugel (New Ulm, Minnesota) carded seven birdies and finished second out of 89 golfers with a 1-under-par 71, his 10th round on par or better this season.
second grader Blake Schuler (Waconia, Minnesota) went 5-under par on the course’s four par-5s, including an eagle at #15, and finished fourth with a straight par 72.
Junior Thomas Gutzmer (Jordan, Minnesota) collected six birdies during his round of 74 (+2) to take 11th and second place Nate Loxtercamp (Richmond, Minn./Melrose Area) totaled 76 (+4) in a tie for 15th place. second grader Sam Berger (Waconia, Minnesota) rounded out the Johnnies’ five with 79 (+7).
second grader Parker Bartels (Oxbow, ND/Kindred) led SJU Blue with a 2-over-par 74, including an eagle on the par-5 #8, to share 11th place with Gutzmer. student in the first year Andreas Boehmer (Eagan, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) and Junior Cameron Lemke (Avon, Minn./Albany) tied for 23rd with 78 (+6) each. Lemke reached Schugel with a career-high seven birdies.
second grader Mason Sunder (Cold Spring, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) led SJU White, who finished 11th (+34, 322) with 78 (+6).
The Johnnies will host another single round tournament tomorrow (Sunday, April 24) at 8:30 am at the Monticello CC (par 71) in Monticello, the SJU Spring Invitational.
