LE MANS, France – The 90th 24 Hours of Le Mans – the third round of the FIA World Endurance Championship takes place on June 11-12 at the famous Sarthe circuit. 62 cars and driver line-ups were invited to take part in scrutineering for the big race.
Returning to its usual mid-June date, the 2022 race will make history for a number of reasons. For the first time ever at Le Mans, the 62 cars will be powered by a 100 per cent renewable fuel – Excellium Racing 100 – developed by TotalEnergies.
This fuel is said to enable an immediate reduction in the carbon monoxide emissions of the racing cars by at least 65 percent.
Toyota Gazoo Racing will try to repeat last year’s success when it triumphed in the first 24 hours of the hypercar era. The Japanese marque will be aiming for a fifth consecutive overall win but will face competition from two-car US manufacturer Glickenhaus and French firm Alpine in the top-of-the-range.
A fascinating battle for class honors awaits this June. The biggest challengers to the current title holders WRT include the Richard Mille Racing Team, which relies on the talent of eight-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Ogier, as well as AF Corse and the legendary Team Penske.
Porsche and Ferrari had a fascinating head-to-head in LMGTE Pro last year, but this time they can expect stiff competition from Corvette Racing.
With a strong field of 23 vehicles, the LMGTE Am class promises a particularly exciting race. Aston Martin, Porsche and Ferrari will engage in a merciless battle that has every chance of going to the end.
“What a cast! After unveiling a full program of activities for racing fans, we are delighted to announce a high-calibre field of 62 cars, promising exciting racing in every class for the 99th anniversary of the Le Mans 24 Hours,” said Pierre Fillon, President, Automobile Club de l’Ouest. “June can’t come soon enough. We are really looking forward to a great endurance race and a week of exciting on-track action.”
