In the past seven days, the 2022 pre-season has kicked off with a slew of announcements and revelations including India potentially getting a Formula E race for the first time. That being said, the grueling 2022 Dakar Rally was coming to an end. Here’s everything you need to know about this past week in motorsport:
After 14 days, 12 stages and 8375km of running across a variety of off-road challenges, the curtain fell on the prestigious 2022 Dakar Rally. Winners in their respective categories were Nasser Al-Attiyah (cars) and Sam Sunderland (motorcycles). For our Indian presence in the motorcycle category, the Hero MotoSports team of Joaquim Rodrigues and Aaron Mare finished 14th and 16th in the final standings. While Harith Noah was withdrawn from the race due to a mechanical failure, he still managed to finish the rally in the Dakar Experience category.
It’s almost auto launch time for the new 2022 era of Formula 1 and the first dates are in. Aston Martin will be first to unveil its 2022 challenger on February 10th, followed by McLaren on February 11th and Ferrari on February 17th. The first three-day pre-season test begins February 23-25 at Circuit de Barcelona Catalunya in Spain.
Shortly after Hyundai Motorsport unveiled its 2022 challenger, Toyota Gazoo Racing and M-Sport Ford unveiled their WRC Rally1 prototypes. The 2022 FIA World Rally Championship gets underway in Monaco on February 20-23.
It looks like India is in the running to host a Formula E race for the first time as the state of Telangana has officially signed a memorandum of understanding to host a race in Hyderabad. Note, however, that this is merely a letter of intent pending final approvals.
The other big announcement is that Maserati will end its long hiatus in motorsport and join the Formula E grid when the Gen3 era kicks off in the 2022-23 season. It will be the first Italian manufacturer to join the all-electric series.
In the 2022 FIA Formula 2 Championship, Jehan Daruvala joins Prema Racing from Carlin for his third season in the Championship. This is not Daruvala’s first rodeo with Prema as the Indian driver had a strong F3 season with the team in 2019, finishing third overall. Pre-season testing begins on March 2-4 in Bahrain, followed by the season opener at the same circuit on March 18-20.
Shortly after Mumbai Falcons announced their driver roster for the 2022 Formula Regional Asian Championship, the team also announced an all-India driver line-up for the 2022 Formula 4 season in the United Arab Emirates. The line-up includes Sohil Shah, who will be contesting his first international championship as a rookie. The other driver will be Yash Aradhya, who has won several national titles including the ‘Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar’, the Indian government’s highest civilian award for children under the age of 18, and the first person in Indian motorsport to receive this award forgive.
The opening round of the 2022 World Rally Championship will take place in Monaco next week 2022 The Formula Regional Asian Championship and Formula 4 UAE season openers begin in Abu Dhabi.
