Photos: Storm Before the Storm – The Monterey Pre-Reunion

Friends, co-workers, and casual passers-by are probably tired of hearing me talk about how special the Monterey Pre-Reunion is year after year. With fewer crowds, lower ticket prices, and almost the same cars in action as the actual reunion, the Monterey Pre-Reunion is a well-kept secret.

Deafening rotary music echoed through the hill foothills with five Mazda-powered prototypes at hand – including this ’89 787 Fire Breather.

The precursor to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion offers racers the opportunity to double track time on a trip to WeatherTech Laguna Seca Raceway and an opportunity to dial in their cars/skills ahead of the big show in a few days.

Over 300 cars were ready for the weekend and more will fill the paddock in the coming days. Don’t forget to join RACER and Vintage Motorsport in the garage area, where we will be supporting the Laguna Seca Raceway Foundation and showing off one of Mazda’s rugged T-616 Le Mans prototypes at the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion later this week.

Gunnar Jeannette has been busy driving three cars including this 1971 Porsche 908/3 prototype from the Revs Institute.

The pre-grid will be moved to the paddock this year to give fans a close look at the racers preparing to hit the track. Here track president and GM John Narigi oversees.

The new pre-grid location means new photo opportunities.

Lee Giannone sprints onto the track in his spectacular ’85 Porsche 962.

Chris MacAllister’s once-conquering 1955 Jaguar D-Type navigates the corkscrew during Sunday morning’s race.

A wide line for Wade Carter (’76 March 76B FAtl) through Turn 5, prelude to a graceful save and drive on.

Ken Adams is primed for Saturday’s Historic Trans Am qualifying session in his ’69 Ford Mustang Boss 302.

Bud Moeller’s ’82 Williams FW08 hurtles out of Turn 11.

Side by side approach the corkscrew. who will give in

Get out of T11 and step on the gas!

Speed down the corkscrew: William Connor’s 80s Porsche 935.

Laurent Parmentier (’77 Chevron B39) says: “See you in a few days!”
