Prince Khaled presents prizes to winners of the 2022 Saudi Arabia Dakar Rally

Jeddah – Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, Advisor to the Guardian of the Two Holy Mosques who is also the Governor of the Mecca region, on Friday supported the closing ceremony of the 3rd edition of the 2022 Saudi Arabia Dakar Rally held at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit in January 2022.

During the rally, participants completed 12 stages hosted by a number of governorates, cities and regions across the kingdom.

Prince Khaled also witnessed the crowning ceremony of the race’s winners in its six categories: cars, motorcycles, quads, trucks and light desert vehicles, in addition to the Dakar Classic category.

Prince Khalid Bin Sultan Al-Abdullah Al-Faisal, Chairman of the Saudi Automobile & Motorcycle Federation (SAMF) and Head of the Saudi Motorsport Co. (SMC), and Deputy Sports Minister Badr Bin Abdurrahman Al-Qadi also attended after the end of 12. Stage of the race that started from Bisha Governorate to Jeddah Governorate covering a total distance of 680 km including 164 km for the timed special stage.

At the end of this stage, Qatari rally driver Nasser Al-Attiyah of the Toyota team won first place in the car category, overtaking Frenchman Sebastien Loeb, driver of the “BRX” team, who finished second, while Saudi Yazeed Al-Rajhi of Over Drive team achieved a historic feat by taking third place to become the first Saudi to climb onto the podium in the Dakar Rally since its inception 44 years ago.

In the motorcycle category, Briton Sam Sunderland of Team GasGas won the title, while Pablo Quintanilla, Chilean biker of Honda Team, was second and Austria’s Matthias Walkner of Red Bull KTM Team took third place.

Frenchman Alexandre Giroud of the Yamaha team’s quad rally driver won the title of the current edition of the rally in the quad category, twenty-five years after his father claimed the title in 1997, while Argentinian Francisco Moreno, the quad rally Driver of “Team Drag On” took second place and Pole Kamil Wisniewski, quad rally driver of team “Orlin” took third place.

In the truck category, the KAMAZ Master crew captured the top three spots at the 2022 Saudi Arabia Dakar Rally as Russian rally driver Dmitry Sotnikov took first place and fellow Eduard Nikolaev was second, followed by Anton Shibalov on the third place.

Chilean driver Francisco Lopez Contardo won the T3 light desert vehicle category, beating Sweden’s Sebastian Eriksson into second place, while Spaniard Christian Gutierrez finished third.

Saudi racer Dania Akeel finished 8th overall, while fellow Saudi rider Mashael AlObaidan finished 17th in her first Dakar Rally debut.

In the Light Desert T4 category, American racer Austin Jones won the title after strong competition with Spaniard Gerard Varese, who finished second, while Lithuanian driver Rokas Paciuska was third overall.
