(DES MOINES, Iowa) – The Main charity classic announced today that its 2021 tournament raised more than $ 7.3 million in support of child charities in Iowa, beating the event’s previous record of $ 6.7 million set in 2020, though the tournament was canceled due to COVID-19.
The annual PGA TOUR Champions event in Des Moines has now raised more than $ 37 million for child charities in Iowa since the Principal Financial Group became title sponsor in 2007.
“The record generosity has taken the Principal Charity Classic to new heights. It is a true testament to the Des Moines sponsors, volunteers, players, fans and community for supporting this world-class golf tournament, ”said Dan Houston, Chairman, President and CEO of Principal. “Former Chairman Nick Cecere and Tournament Director Doug Habgood also deserve great credit for successfully running the Principal Charity Classic through two unprecedented years and reaffirming the tournament’s commitment to helping the children of Iowa.”
The Principal Charity Classic also announced the appointment of Ken McCullum, Senior Vice President and Chief Risk Officer for Principal, as Chairman of the Board. McCullum replaces Cecere, who will remain on the board.
The Principal Charity Classic affects the lives of more than 130,000 Iowa children each year in philanthropic areas including education, health, and the arts and culture. Tournament proceeds support four Tournament charity partner in the Des Moines Area: Blank Children’s Hospital, MercyOne Des Moines, United Way of Central Iowa, and Variety – the Iowa children’s charity. Besides, the event is Charity birdies Program supports nearly 100 nonprofits across the state of Iowa.
This year’s event also produced one of the most memorable rounds of competitive play in tournament history. Golf enthusiasts around the world saw champion Stephen Ames rallying from seven strokes back into the final round to claim his second PGA TOUR Champions win, beating 2003 Masters champion Mike Weir in one fell swoop.
