Red Bull has given local drift enthusiasts an unforgettable experience with Sri Lanka’s first Red Bull Car Park Drift Clinic. The event, which took place on November 27th, was a first for Sri Lanka with over 35 drivers participating and a master class in drifting led by Lebanese master driver Abdo Feghali.
Despite the challenge of hosting the event in Sri Lanka for the first time, as well as the health guidelines and challenges of hosting a public event against the backdrop of the pandemic, the response was inspiring and real testament to the popularity of drifting in Sri Lanka and Red Bull’s commitment to giving Wiiings to local drivers. The event reflected Sri Lanka’s potential to one day host the World Cup finals.
The Red Bull Car Park Drift was an expected event in the Red Bull event calendar. The sport met with great interest not only from racing enthusiasts and drivers, but also from the spectators. As a premiere for Sri Lanka, the event was special in two ways, as the Sri Lankan drifters even offered the opportunity to prove their skills and learn from the champion drifter Abdo Feghali. Feghali stepped into the limelight as a drifting legend when he became rally champion at the first Red Bull Car Park drift event in Lebanon in 2008. Feghali began his racing career in 1998 and became a three-time national champion
Lebanon hosted the first Red Bull Car Park drift event in 2008, where all underground drifters could show their skills, and put rally champion Feghali in the spotlight, making him a drifting legend. He broke the Guinness World Record for the longest drift in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in 2012 and won the overall ranking of the Lebanese Rally Championship the following year. Feghali finished second in the Lebanon Rally in 2000, 2004, 2006 and 2012 and finished third in 2002, 2003 and 2011. He was also Middle Eastern Mountain Champion from 2007 to 2010 and Lebanese Mountain Champion from 2006 and 2012. Feghali, a rally driver and three-time national champion, began his career in 1998. His passion for drifting led him to develop and use his talent Become a Drift Veteran. In 2013 Feghali won the Lebanese overall rally championship. In 2012 he broke the Guinness World Record for the longest drift in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
The drift circuit itself has different types of drift challenges. The assessment criteria include vehicle design, noise and smoke levels, and the driver’s general drifting skills and abilities through obstacle courses and other competitive challenges.
Local drifters and racing enthusiasts have more to look forward to next year as Red Bull Sri Lanka plans to host Red Bull Car Park Drift qualifiers in 2022 with racers in full swing and ready for more.
