Solberg and Sordo will share the third WRC Hyundai in 2022

The pair, along with Thierry Neuville and 2019 champion Ott Tanak, will complete the Korean brand’s driver line-up for the new Hybrid Rally 1 era of the WRC.

Solberg, the son of 2003 World Champion Petter Solberg, got the tip to make the leap into third car after impressing in selected races in the WRC car this season, with a third appearance for the Rally Spain later in this month.

Likewise, Sordo teased last month that his plans for 2022 would not come as a surprise. With confirmation that his services will be retained, the veteran Spaniard will remain with Hyundai since joining the team in 2014, albeit part-time.

For Solberg, this will be his first real attack on the WRC, with the 20-year-old having largely focused this year’s campaign on a WRC2 program with Hyundai.

“It is a dream to be able to climb into the third WRC car together with Dani Sordo in order to contest selected events. It’s really cool, ”said Solberg, who tested Hyundai’s 2022 prototype last month.

“I also have the other team-mates Thierry and Ott, who are great people, who you can learn from and who have a lot of experience. I’m only 20 so it’s a big step so early in my career.

“I’m really looking forward to it and to find out which events I will be doing. I’m looking forward to driving the new era of cars, the Rally1; it is definitely a special time to take part in the WRC. “

Having shared a car with recently confirmed M-Sport driver Craig Breen for the past three years, Sordo is excited to partner with a new rising star in Solberg.

“I’ve said many times that Hyundai Motorsport is like family to me, so I’m excited to continue my career with them in the new hybrid era of the WRC,” said Sordo.

“We have worked together for many years and shared some important moments.

“I look forward to more to come as we prepare for new challenges.

“It’s important to be consistent when faced with new regulations, but we’re also fortunate to have new talent like Oliver on this new adventure. I am happy.”

Hyundai boss Andrea Adamo added: “We are delighted to confirm Dani and Oliver alongside Thierry and Ott in our third car for the next season.

“We think it’s the best compromise between experience and youth and the ideal mix for a new era of WRC.

“Dani will not only lead a select number of events, but will also work with us on events when Oliver steps in.

“His approach to racing and his extensive experience will be a great asset to our team when our learning curve is high with the new regulations.

“We will have an important continuity and mutual trust; It’s also good to have offspring like Oliver in addition to the experience our existing crews bring with them.

“We will undoubtedly have a very strong line-up when we start a new chapter for Hyundai Motorsport.”

It is not yet clear how the events will be divided between Solberg and Sordo in the next season.
