Sordo learns a lot about “amazing” ERC rallies

World star Dani Sordo delivered a second podium finish in the FIA European Rally Championship for Team MRF Tires at the 55th Azores Rally on Saturday – and described the experience as “amazing”.

Sordo, a winner of three FIA World Rally Championship events, was recruited into the ERC as part of MRF Tires’ ongoing development program and used his extensive experience by winning three stages and taking the lead for a period.

And while Sordo couldn’t stop eventual winner Andreas Mikkelsen during the afternoon, he was able to collect important data for MRF Tires.

“The rally was not easy and the conditions on the first day were really difficult,” said Sordo, who started together with co-driver Cándido Carrera in a Hyundai i20 R5. “But on the second day we were in pace and I am confident that we can improve further if I know the tires a little better. But we were able to take away a lot of information from this weekend that will be very important for the next rally. “

Although Sordo started the final loop of three stages 0.1 seconds ahead of Mikkelsen, he admitted that he feared that he would no longer be able to hold out. “To be honest, I expected Mikkelsen to be better with four new tires, that’s normal because I used the same tires that morning as in the previous stages,” explained Sordo. “But I still pushed like hell on the last stage, my pace wasn’t bad, but Mikkelsen had better pace.

“It’s a great rally and Sete Cidades is one of the most beautiful stages I’ve ever driven, it was really nice and very demanding, it was unbelievable.”
