Alpine’s Fernando Alonso says his Formula 1 comeback season this year has been “fantastic for me”.
After spending two years without sport after a series of difficult seasons at McLaren, the Spaniard decided to return to F1 in 2021.
Alonso spent the first few laps of the campaign trying to get back to life in the premier motorsport series but soon found rhythm and drove competitively.
The best result in third was achieved in Qatar towards the end of the season. This was the first time the Spaniard was on the podium since the 2014 Hungarian Grand Prix.
“I think it was definitely not easy for us at the beginning of the year. In my case, when I got back to the sport, I wasn’t 100 percent ready and confident to push the car to the limit, ”said Alonso.
“It must have taken a couple of races to get to Baku. We made a few changes to the car, the power steering and the feel of the front tires were probably what I missed the most.
“I think we’ve made a big step forward with this confidence. Overall, the season has been fantastic for me.
“Honestly, [I’m] super happy to be back in F1. I really enjoyed every single race, on and off the track. I was happy and I enjoy every second.
“This is my best season since 2014, I think in terms of points and positions. Definitely a good comeback I think. In any case, better prepared for 2022. “
Alonso has made no secret of the fact that the new regulations that will be introduced next year have induced him to return.
The 40-year-old, who is well on the way to becoming the most experienced Formula 1 driver of all time in 2022, hopes that the new technical rules can bring him a third world championship.
