The route for the Dakar Rally 2022, which takes place across the Saudi Arabian desert, was announced in a virtual presentation on Sunday afternoon and reveals a challenging terrain that will be driven over 12 stages from January 1st to 14th.

“It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the nation of motorsport and the home of the Dakar Rally, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for the third time in a row,” said Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, Minister of Sports and President of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee.

The endurance test is the third Dakar Rally in a row in Saudi Arabia and the 44th edition of the rally itself, in which 1,065 participants on board 578 vehicles drive over 8,375 km of treacherous routes in the various categories.

“The top motorsport competitions have found a new home in the Kingdom,” added Prince Abdulaziz. “From the Dakar Rally, the toughest rally in the world, to the World Rally Championship, the FIA ​​Formula E, Extreme E and of course the upcoming FIA Formula 1 World Championship.”

The landscape and scenery of the course are similar to the last edition and it begins and ends after 12 stages in the port city of Jeddah.

From canyons and cliffs in the NEOM region to dunes around Riyadh, the race also leads the Red Sea coast and the mysterious Empty Quarter.

Hybrid vehicles make their debut with top contenders Stephane Peterhansel, a 14-time winner, and Carlos Sainz, 2010, 2018 and 2020 winner, behind the wheel in the new category.

The previous champions Toby Price, Sam Sunderland, Matthias Walkner, Ricky Brabec and Kevin Benavides will also take part in the motorcycle race.

Motorcycle and quad racers are equipped with airbag vests that can minimize the consequences of a high-speed impact.

Stage 1A takes place on Saturday, January 1st, 2022 and leads from the starting point Jeddah to Hail over a total of 636 km. The next day there will be a 546 km loop that starts and ends in Hail for stage 1B.

On Monday, January 3rd, the 2nd stage of the rally between Hail and Al-Artawiya will take place over 585 km. Stage 3 takes place the next day on a 554 km long trail from Al-Artawiyah to Al-Qaysumah.

In stage 4, the race will take place on Wednesday, January 5th, over 707 km from Al-Qaysumah to Riyadh.

After a day of rest on Saturday, it goes back on Sunday, January 7th, with the 700 km long stage 7 from Riyadh to Al-Dawadimi.

The 8th stage covers a further 828 km, the longest of the Dakar Rally 2022, which leads the race to Wadi Al-Dawasir. On the 9th stage on the next day, the participants will do a 490 km lap around Wadi Al-Dawasir.

On Wednesday, January 12th, stage 10 leads over a 757 km long journey from Wadi Al-Dawasir to Bisha. In Bisha, a 500 km lap will cover stage 11 on Thursday.

Finally, on Friday January 14th, the 12th stage from Bisha back to Jeddah concludes the Dakar Rally 2022.
