The organizers of the internationally acclaimed Ulster Rally, Northern Ireland Motor Club, are gearing up for another successful high profile sporting event on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th August after securing sponsorship from ABC Council.
The major live motorsport event promises to raise the profile of the county and boost tourism growth when it returns to Counties Armagh and Down for another thrilling competition.
Around 100 crews from Great Britain and Ireland will compete for the fastest route on the demanding course, which includes nine tests on closed roads and covers a total distance of 94 miles, centered on the area between Armagh, Banbridge and Newry.
Spectators will have the opportunity to see the rally action throughout the event, meet the drivers and get up close and personal with the cars. Regroupings are scheduled at 6.30pm on Friday 19th August in Banbridge town center and Armagh City Hotel car park from 11.45am on the morning of Saturday 20th August.
The event starts at 5pm on Friday and consists of 3 Friday night stages in the Newry and Loughbrickland areas including the challenging 15 mile Bronte Homeland stage before returning to an overnight stay in Newry.
There are three stages on Saturday along a compact route between Newry and Armagh via the Poyntz Pass and Tandragee areas. Each stage is run twice between maintenance stops at Newry and a regrouping at Armagh.
The ceremonial start, finish and service park will be at the base of the rally at the main sponsor’s Modern Tires depot in Carnbane Gardens, Newry.
The event has attracted a large number of local participants as well as visitors from Ireland and the UK due to its involvement in the Irish Tarmac Championship and the European Celtic Cup. Full details of the entrants can be found in the free spectator program at ulsterrally.com
With the district providing the perfect backdrop for this prestigious sporting event, Lord Mayor Councilor Paul Greenfield said: “With the growth of sports tourism and the significant economic benefits it brings, we are delighted to partner with Northern Ireland Motor Club and support their hosting stages the Ulster Rally here and
bring new investments to this region.

The invaluable exposure generated by the live streamed Ulster Rally greatly raises the profile of our county as a place capable of hosting international events of the highest caliber and contributes significantly to the development of our tourism and hospitality sector .
“We welcome the opportunity to showcase our district to a global audience and look forward to a weekend of sporting action not to be missed. Good luck to all competitors. I would encourage spectators to come and see all the drivers and cars at the Banbridge and Armagh regroupings.”
Wayne Turkington, Modern Tires Ulster Rally 2022 Instructor, said how much the organizers appreciated the Council’s support through the International Tourism Events Fund.
“The event is run entirely by volunteers who volunteer their time for the love of the sport. Nevertheless, without the support of our sponsors and host associations, we could not run an event at the high level required to keep our costs as low as possible.
“Several hundred volunteer Safety Marshals will be on duty along the route to ensure the highest possible level of safety for both participants and spectators. For your own safety and that of others, please follow their instructions and always respect the property of the landowners.”
