Manufactured with the support of the Williams family, King Richard tells the story of how Richard Williams raised his daughters to be tennis stars while allowing them to grow up with a well-rounded education.
The film was produced by Smith, who has already won a BAFTA for Best Actor and is considered the favorite for another win at Sunday’s Academy Awards.
Hamilton, who is friends with both Smith and the Williams sisters, said he was inspired by the story of the latter’s rise to become the biggest stars in their sport, with obvious parallels to his own journey to the forefront of motorsport with the support of his family.
“I was very lucky to speak to Serena and Venus about the whole process and how excited they were,” he said when asked about the film by Motorsport.com.
“And of course I know Will who is so proud of what he was able to project with this film. I know he got awards and stuff but I was really moved by the story because I think we all saw them both rise and see their success and their trials and tribulations.
“But like all of us [we] very much not always understand what it takes to get there. People who tune in probably just think they’re simply the best and don’t understand the dedication and time and sacrifice they have to put in. So it’s amazing that Will was able to point that out.
“Behind every successful person there is always someone and I can identify with that because I have a really great family, without which I wouldn’t be here today. And I hope that someday I’ll be able to do something similar.
“I think it’s inspiring for families out there. I’m sure everyone here who has kids wants the best for their kids, want to create the best opportunity and push them in the right way, but not too much. And I think that was a great demonstration of how to do that.”

Hamilton stressed that the documentary he is currently making is his priority for now.
“We have this documentary that we’re working on and I think you just have to do everything at the right time,” he said.
“The documentary is the focus. I think stories are there to be told. I think it’s important. I think you can learn a lot there.
“And as I mentioned earlier, if your story can even have a positive impact on a person or a family, it could be amazing for people to have a positive impact and influence.”
“So I think maybe one day I’ll try to do the same. Very inspired by how Will did it with his team. And pretty proud of her with these two icons. So yes, maybe one day.”
When asked who he would like to play in a biopic, Hamilton noted that he is already involved in a second film project, which involves a fictional story.
“I have no idea who to play against,” he said. “I don’t know who I would use right now. I should do some research!
“But I’m going through a casting process right now for another project I have. And that’s a pretty interesting process to go through. So it’s pretty exciting to find out about all these different characters, people who could fit into a role that’s in the script.
“Once the script is written and they write that character, it’s quite an interesting process to find someone who fits in and represents that character.”
